Magical Marley Sunshine was more than my dog.
He was my teacher, my dance partner, and the reason this space exists. Through him, I learned to slow down, to listen, and to see training as a playful, joyful experience — one that became so much more.
What started as a way to help Marley through a few early struggles, became the most joyful and emotionally fulfilling relationship I’ve ever shared with a dog. Games changed everything for us. They gave us a special way of communicating, along with confidence and mutual trust — and added even more joy into our relationship.
Marley’s life — and everything he taught me — became the heart of my book, Lessons from Marley — What my dog taught me about love, trust and training. Writing it was my way of honoring his joy, his transformation, his brilliance, and the quiet wisdom he shared through every small success and silly moment. This website, too, is part of that legacy.
Two weeks before I lost Marley, he and I shared a special practice session together as a soft rain fell. It turned out to be our last dance together. That moment — filled with play, trust, and love — now lives on in the video below.
Marley passed suddenly during surgery from a condition called a gallbladder mucocele — something many pet parents have never heard of until it’s too late. He was only six years old, and sharing his story is my way of helping raise awareness, encouraging owners to trust their instincts, and reminding us all how precious the time with our dogs truly is.
Today, I carry Marley’s lessons forward with little JJ — continuing the journey with curiosity, kindness, and joy. Love doesn’t disappear. It grows and becomes the foundation for everything that comes next.

Our last dance together. 💕
This video holds the heart of our relationship — joy, trust, and a special connection — just as it was.
One of my favorite, spur of the moment routines. The smile on Marley’s face and his little wagging tail showed me just how much fun he was having.
I put on some holiday PJ’s, slipped a matching bandana around Marley’s neck and together we created a fun Christmas dance.
This training session turned into a beautiful experience with my boy — one of those quiet moments that stays with you forever.
Marley loved to show off his favorite tricks.
Marley loved tricks and he successfully completed the requirements for his novice, intermediate and advanced trick dog titles with the AKC (American Kennel Club).
Sometimes things don’t always go to plan, and because I filmed so often, I was able to capture moments I may have missed otherwise.
Whenever I watch these videos, they bring me right back to each moment and I can still feel the joy of watching some of Marley’s creative moves.

If you’ve ever loved a dog like family, if you’ve ever felt a connection so deep that the joy you have experienced far exceeds the intense heartbreak of losing them — then this book is for you.

This photo was taken the day we picked up JJ and began our journey home from Texas— six and 1/2 months after losing Marley. It was a day filled with both heartbreak and hope. There were tears of joy for finally getting to meet and hold JJ, mixed with memories of a brilliant little dog who brought so much laughter and fun into my life.
Marley wasn’t being replaced — he was being carried forward. Everything he taught me about love, play, and living in the moment became the foundation for everything that comes next.
Marley’s legacy lives on not only in memories, but in every relationship built through patience, play, and love. His story continues with JJ— one joyful game at a time.
